This book is related to the works of the modern American playwright Eugene O‘Neill. He is highly influenced by the classical drama not only in themes (powerful and universal), but also in the sense of drama as a ritual. He uses classical, Biblical and contemporary myths in the structure of the play. He tries to be a link between ancient classical tragedy and modern tragedy. The selection of plays under study may seem to be arbitrary but they are the most representative ones and the study of the same may help in giving a clue to O‘Neillian mind as a social critic. O‘Neill portrayed perplexed characters in his drama. His characters are wrapped in obsession relationships. His chief concern is to depict the tragic predicament of man wrestling against the self and the society.
